Little Students' Day

Delicious buns freshly baked with the help of Dr Renata Korzeniowskiej-Ginter, a ‘learning-through-play’ session with the dogs of the Grupa Enzo foundation, a workshop on honey, self-made milkshakes, and even a chance to share in the birthday celebrations of 5-year-old Wojtek, are just some of the attractions that were enjoyed by all who attended the ‘Little Students’ Day' at the Gdynia Maritime University on Wednesday.

The event was in a sense a continuation of the Maritime Day Camp, which, organised for the children of GMU staff, students, and doctoral candidates two years ago, was a great success, with more than 40 kids between the ages of 5 and 14 years taking part.

Little Students’ Day began in the Tadeusz Meissner Auditorium, where the children and their parents were welcomed by the University’s Promotions Team.

After being introduced to their caregivers, the chance to have their photographs taken with University sailors, and being divided into groups, a day of fun and adventure began.

The youngest ‘little students’ headed for the kitchen, where they baked deliciously sweet and fragrant buns with the help of Renata Korzeniowskiej–Ginter and learnt how grain is turned into flour.

Meanwhile, the older participants were absorbed in an engaging physics lesson, before - as is only befitting of a Maritime University with over 100 years of tradition - a visit to the Hall of tradition where they were introduced to GMU’s history, and maritime customs and formalities, which was all very interestingly presented by Joanna Stasiak.

Next was the chance to meet the special guests of the day – two beautiful dogs from the Grupa ENZO foundation. While the first group got to have some fun with our furry guests, the others made use of the opportunity to take some souvenir photos in a photo booth and were shown the basics of a military drill by the University’s Guard of Honour.

After dinner served in the University canteen, there was another surprise as one of the Children, Wojtek, got to celebrate his 5th birthday with a cake.

But that’s not all! After a short break, two more activities awaited. The first, a very sweet little workshop on honey. Who could have known that there are so many types? And finally, the children learnt how to make healthy milkshakes that are full of flavour and goodness. Yum! The perfect end to the day!

Before going home, all participants of Little Students’ Day received a certificate of attendance and a unique copy of Andrzej Perepeczko’s book “Wild Ant” [Dzika Mrówka], signed by the author.

It was a fun-filled day at GMU and the smiling faces of the ‘Little Students’ made it all the more worthwhile.

We hope to see you all again next year!

We’d like to thank all caregivers and staff for their involvement and effort in helping to organise the day.
