GMU Lit Up in Blue For World Maritime Day

On the evening of Thursday 29th September, the main building of Gdynia Maritime University on Morska Street glowed blue in celebration of World Maritime Day.  Held annually on the last Thursday in September, World Maritime Day is an initiative of the Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), as part of efforts to highlight the key role of seafarers in shipping and its future.

The main theme of this year's initiative is “New technologies for greener shipping”. This reflects the need to support the green transformation of the maritime sector and focus on the importance of sustainability and the need for a better and greener approach to rebuilding a post-pandemic world.

The International Maritime Organisation actively supports efforts towards greener shipping in the future, showcasing maritime innovation, research and development and demonstrating methods for implementing new technologies.

The theme of new technologies for greener shipping is in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly concerning climate action and the responsible use of oceans, seas and marine resources, sustainable development of industry, innovation and infrastructure, as well as in highlighting the importance of partnerships and the implementation of the instruments needed to achieve these goals.
