The Return of Sports Day Brings Administration Success
A new format, new sporting events, and more participants. Sports Day returned to GMU this year in style after a 2-year absence. There was laughter, great fun and a lot of sporting emotions! The competition was close; the overall winner decided by a tie-breaker. And it was the University’s administration team that came out on top.
- I’m glad that we can finally gather in person. We thought long and hard about how best to organise this Sports Day, but there was no doubt that we wanted it to go ahead - said Rector Professor Adam Weintrit as he greeted GMU students and staff. - This year, we’ve changed the format slightly. In previous years, teams competed from only the University’s four faculties competed against one another, whereas this year we have invited six teams to enter. For the first time taking part are representatives of the Maritime Institute and the University’s Administration. Here on the sports field, where we will shortly compete, will in little more than a year from now be the site of a new sports complex, the construction of which is due to start in June. I hope that the next editions of our Sports Day will take place using the new indoor and outdoor facilities, thanks to which we will be able to further increase the number of events - the Rector added.
The competition involved six teams competing in nine events (e-sport events took place earlier). Already after the first events, it was clear just how seriously the participants took the competition. And despite the previous three editions being dominated by the Faculty of Navigation, the competition was fiercely close. There was no shortage of emotions, which were also shared by the many spectators who cheered vigorously and loudly, especially during the ergometer races, tug-of-war, and penalty kicks.
Following all events, the result was tied with three teams, Administration, Faculty of Marine Engineering and Faculty of Navigation, all at 40 points. The winner was decided by a tie-breaker. For the second time in the afternoon, representatives of each team faced each other in darts - the aim to gain the greatest number of points in three turns. The most accurate player was Bursar Filip Malata, who won it for the debuting Administration team. After the results were announced, all participants and spectators gathered for refreshments.
The 2022 Sports Day was organised by Gdynia Maritime University Sport and Recreation Centre.
