100-Year-Old Tennis Player Honoured by HM the Rector of GMU
The oldest tennis player in Poland, and quite possibly the world, turned 100 on Friday 3rd February 2023. Tadeusz Krzyszkowski met on court with the Rector of Gdynia Maritime University, Professor Adam Weintrit, the Major of Gdynia, Dr Wojciech Szczurek, the President of the Arka Gdynia Tennis Club, Radosław Szymanik, and the Director of the GMU Sport and Recreation Centre, Dr Andrzej Lachowicz.
Presenting an award for Meritorious Employees to the former GMU staff member, the Rector commented:
- The Awards Chapter of our University has given you the title of the "Meritorious Employee of Gdynia Maritime University." These awards are exceptional - only a few of our employees receive them and can be proud of them. I hope that this is something you, Sir, will also be proud of. It is also a historic moment for me because it's the first time I shake the hand of a centenary, which is a great honour. I wish you health and all the best!
When asked by Professor Adam Weintrit, what is his advice for staying in shape, he replied:
- There's no need to overdo it.
Presenting Mr Krzyszkowski with a bouquet, the President of Gdynia, Dr Wojciech Szczurek, added:
- My sincerest congratulations, I am full of admiration, and like many can only dream of being able to enjoy a game of tennis at 100 years of age.
Tadeusz Krzyszkowski was born in 1923 in Torun and began his adventure with tennis 90 years ago. After completing his studies in Wroclaw, he moved to Gdynia and since then has spent time almost every day on the court. During the years 1956-1964, he worked as a tutor at the boarding house of the State Maritime School in Gdynia. He is an honorary member of the Arka Gdynia Tennis Club and enjoys special privileges as the oldest active Polish tennis player. His love for tennis led him to become a trainer. His three sons won medals at the Polish Championships, and also went on to train tennis.
Here's to your health, Sir, from the entire GMU community!
