GMU Wins Omega Class Polish Sailing Cup
On 28 and 29 September 2024, the 7th round of the Polish Omega Class Sailing Cup took place in Niesulice. Taking part in the regattas were 36 crews across two categories, Sport and Standard.
In the Sport category, Gdynia Maritime University was represented by the crew of the POL-654 yacht, comprising Dr Jędrzej Charłampowicz, Bartosz Sadowski and Mikołaj Merkler. After winning the Polish championships, the team began the 7th round of the Sailing Cup in first place. Representing GMU in the Standard category was the crew of the POL-655 yacht: Mateusz Grzempa, Wiktor Kreft and Kacper Żywiczka.
Following the nine races which were carried out as part of the competition in challenging weather conditions, the POL-655 team placed a respectable fifth.
The POL-654 team aimed to at least maintain their position in first place to ensure their success in winning the Polish Cup. The crew finished extremely well in fourth place, doing more than enough to be sure of their historic victory in the competition.
The GMU crew, made up of dr Jędrzej Charłampowicz (Dep. Logistics and Transport), Bartosz Sadowski (Fac. Maritime Engineering) and Mikołaj Merkler (Fac. Navigation) won the Polish Omega Class Sailing Cup, beating Gdansk University of Technology and Vector Sails in the final classification. Kacper Gwóźdź (Fac. Navigation) also contributed to the team’s victory as part of the crew during the regattas in Olsztyn.
In the standard class, GMU team POL-655 finished the competition in 12th (Kinga Brzóska and Wiktor Kreft) and 13th place (Mateusz Grzempa, Kinga Brzóska, Wiktor Kreft).
Congratulations to all GMU crew members!
