Representatives of Antwerp Maritime Academy Visit GMU
On 29-30 October 2024, GMU hosted representatives of Antwerp Maritime Academy (Hogere Zeevaartschool Antwerpen), Dr Rowan Van Schaeren (General Manager) and Dr Remke Willemen (Head of Education). The visit aimed to strengthen the current cooperation between the two higher education institutions, involving both academic staff and students, facilitate the exchange of experience in maritime education, and jointly identify new areas for partnerships. In the absence of HM The Rector of GMU, currently attending a conference in China, the University was represented by the Deputy Rector for Student Affairs and Education, Dr Sambor Guze.
Our guests from Belgium were given a detailed overview of the study programmes carried out at the University, in particular concerning maritime subjects. They also had the opportunity to tour the University’s infrastructure, including laboratories, workshops and simulators at the Faculties of Electrical Engineering, Marine Engineering and Navigation, meet Faculty authorities and observe some classes and lectures. The visit to Gdynia also provided an opportunity to meet the Director of the Ship Management and Seagoing Service Department, Captain Dariusz Jellonek, and the crew on board the S/V Dar Młodzieży, on which 1st-year students at Antwerp Maritime Academy carry out seafarer training. Guest also visited the University’s Sports and Recreation Centre and the nearby Network of Permanent Orienteering Courses.
Special thanks to the staff at all Faculties for their interesting demonstrations of the potential of individual laboratories during their classes. The visit of Antwerp Maritime Academy Staff was arranged and coordinated by Dr Piotr Kopacz of the GMU Department of Navigation.
