GMU Authorities Meet with General Representatives of the Embassy of Belgium – Delegation of Flanders in Poland.

On 19 March 2025, GMU authorities met with General Representatives of the Embassy of Belgium –  Delegation of Flanders in Poland to discuss closer cooperation with Belgium.  Since 2008, Gdynia Maritime University has cooperated with Antwerp Maritime Academy. The training of students from Belgium continues the tradition of the two institutions' students studying together which began at the Faculty of Navigation of the University College in Southampton in 1940 where Polish and Belgian cadets shared classrooms.

In 2024, Antwerp Maritime Academy became a member of the International Association of Maritime Universities  – HM The Rector of GMU, Professor Adam Weintrit reminded those gathered for the meeting. –  An audit of the Academy was carried out before awarding membership by Captain Piotr Kopacz from the Faculty of Navigation of GMU.

Taking part in the meeting from the University were: HM The Rector of GMU, Professor Adam Weintrit; the Deputy Rector for Science, Dr Dariusz Barbucha; the Deputy Rector for Education and Student Affairs, Dr Sambor Guze; the Deputy Rector for Internationalisation, Cooperation and Development, Professor Tomasz Tarasiuk; the Director of the Maritime Operations Department, Captain Dariusz Jellonnek; and Dr Piotr Kopacz from the Faculty of Navigation.  Representing the Belgium side were the General Representative of the Embassy of Belgium –  Delegation of Flanders, Matthias De Moor; and the Deputy General Representative of the Embassy of Belgium – Delegation of Flanders in Poland, Sofie Geerts. The meeting was an opportunity to outline the scope of cooperation, particularly concerning maritime education.  Both sides also presented the education on offer at their home institution, as well as their involvement in research and international cooperation. 

The White Frigate will arrive in Antwerp on 20 March where 104 Belgium students will embark on the ship for a month’s training, during which they will call at the port of Ponta Delgada in the Azores.
