Nearly 3,500 Visitors Board Dar Młodzieży During Gdynia Maritime Days

Gdynia Maritime University's frigate, Dar Młodzieży, was visited by 3477 persons as part of Gdynia Maritime Days. The unveiling of a memorial plaque by HM The Rector, Professor Adam Weintrit, commemorating the late Professor Andrzej Perepeczko, was the highlight of the city-wide event.

A celebration day for the sailors, port workers, fishermen, shipyard workers, and other people connected with the sea was first held in Gdynia 92 years ago. Already back then it proved to be a great success, gathering over 100 thousand visitors. In connection with those first celebrations, Gdynia has periodically held its Maritime Days since 2013.

On 23 June 2024 Gdynia Maritime University contributed to this longstanding tradition by organising an Open Day on board Dar Młodzieży. Members of the public – residents of Gdynia, tourists, and indeed anyone who wished to climb on board the deck of the famous frigate, were welcome to see the ship that provides training to GMU students and students of other maritime schools worldwide. Additionally, 400 visitors used the opportunity to visit the A. Ledóchowski Planetarium and simulators, located in the nearby building of the Faculty of Navigation.

On the initiative of Mr Lechosław Bar and his Foundation for Maritime Education, a memorial plaque commemorating the late Professor Andrzej Perepeczko – a graduate of the Maritime School in Gdynia, a teacher, lecturer, Dean of the Faculty of Marine Engineering, the author of textbooks, and a talented maritime writer – was unveiled. HM The Rector, Professor Adam Weintrit, accompanied by the Director of the GMU Ship Management Office, Dariusz Jellonnek, had the honour of unveiling the plaque to the public.

Gdynia Maritime days 2024 will last until 30 June.
