Professor Stanisław Gucma Has Died
It is with great regret and sadness that we learned of the passing of the distinguished Dean and former Rector of the Maritime University of Szczecin, Professor Stanisław Gucma. From the beginning, Professor Stanisław Gucma’s career was connected with the sea. He combined his work at sea with scientific activity, earning successive academic degrees and the title of professor.
From 1984 until 1990, Professor Gucma held the post of Dean of the Faculty of Navigation, and from 1990 until 1996, he was the Director of the Maritime Navigation Institute. In his research, he focused on the demarcation and shaping of waterways. Starting in 1996, he held the post of Rector of the Higher Maritime School for two terms of office. In 2002, in recognition of his academic work, the President of Poland granted him the title of professor. In 2008, he was made the Rector of the Maritime University of Szczecin (MUS), a role which he held until 2016.
His time as Rector of MUS saw the establishment of the House of Creative Works and Maritime Training Centre in Świnoujście, the initiation of the construction of the Baltic Fishing Training Centre, the creation of the Maritime Training Centre in Kołobrzeg, and the addition of new buildings to the university. Professor Gucma was also involved in obtaining funding and the implementation of a project for the building of the training and research vessel Nawigator XXI, as well as the creation of the Marine Traffic Engineering Centre and the LNG Training Centre.
The passing of the Professor is an irreparable loss for the entire academic community and the maritime industry.
