Rector Takes Part in Secure Borders, Efficient Transport Webinar Held by EU Transport Projects Centre (CUPT)
On 10 and 11 April 2025, a webinar organised as part of the Transport Research Observatory took place with the involvement of experts from Poland and abroad, including representatives from the transport sector, European funds, cyber security, and military mobility. Speaking at the webinar was HM The Rector of Gdynia Maritime University, Professor Adam Weintrit.
The first day of the webinar, entitled “Poland as the Gateway to Europe – How to Ensure Transport Security and Efficiency? Secure Borders, Efficient Transport – Challenges and Opportunities for Poland through EU Membership”, was dedicated to issues of military mobility and the resilience of transport infrastructure. The day was made up of four themed sessions: Infrastructure 2.0 – Dual Use in Practice; Funding Fit for the Challenges – Needs and Opportunities; EU Funds as a Driver of Transport and Mobility Development for Security; Cybersecurity in Transport – A Race Against Time.
As part of the Funding Fit for the Challenges – Needs and Opportunities session, HM The Rector of GMU, Professor Adam Weintrit gave a talk on “Current challenges in global shipping – an opportunity for the further growth of maritime transport in Poland”, during which he touched on matters concerning alternative fuels, climate change, e-navigation, autonomous shipping, and widespread digitalisation and robotisation.
In relation to the challenges in global shipping, he also spoke about maritime education and the challenges currently faced by maritime universities around the world, including Gdynia Maritime University, highlighting the need for such educational institutions to demonstrate extraordinary abilities to adapt. The Rector concluded his presentation by remarking that the future development of Poland’s maritime economy is dependent on high standards of maritime education, and hence the need for education at sea on board training vessels and the further development of the maritime ports and shipbuilding industry. He also noted that the development of the maritime economy stems from an efficient, modern maritime administration and is dependent on shipowners.
