In 2016, Gdynia Maritime Academy was awarded the Poland Smart Growth award during the Smart Growth Forum in Jasiona, near Rzeszów.  

GMA received the award in the “Higher Education” category for the project “Construction and Development of the Academy of Fisheries and Maritime Studies in the Republic of Angola”. Sopot-based company Navimor International was also awarded for the same project in the category of Innovative Company. Gdynia Maritime Academy was the main education and science partner of the new education centre, and Navimor International was the main developer and construction company involved in the project. A presentation on the main achievements of the projects was given during one of 11 sessions under the title “Fishing and the Sea”, held alongside the Forum’s debates. The main aspects of the building process, as well as the development and opening of the Academy of Fisheries and Marine Studies in Namibia, Angola were presented by Professor Janusz Mindykowski, who was also the moderator of the sessions as well as sessions on “Higher Education and Science”.

In addition to Gdynia Maritime Academy, awards in the category of “Higher Education” were also presented to the Technology Transfer Centre at Jagiellonian University, Gdansk University of Technology, Kazimierz the Great University in Bydgoszcz, as well as Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences.
