Welcome to Gdynia Maritime University
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Gdynia Maritime University, a modern, dynamically developing state university in Poland, has been providing maritime education for more than 100 years. The home of the Maritime University since 1930 is the modernist city of Gdynia, known as the city that was born of “dreams and the sea”. Gdynia is the home port of the University’s ships on which we provide training for our students, Dar Młodzieży and Horyzont II, and in the marina, our sailing yachts, Nest, Almak, and Twins. Opposite the marina are the University’s Faculty of Navigation building, the planetarium, and a GMU student residence.
The sea defines us – it is our window to the world.
Study programmes at Gdynia Maritime University lead to a wide range of career opportunities, enabling graduates to fulfil their dreams. However, studying at GMU is no walk in the park. It requires commitment and consistency in carrying out academic work. The highly qualified graduates of Gdynia Maritime University become citizens of the world – they take up careers on board merchant, passenger, and research ships, sailing the seas and oceans in lucrative positions in domestic and foreign companies within the broadly understood maritime economy. These graduates are well-prepared for their careers. During their studies, they gain knowledge in accordance with the international standards of global maritime organisations.
With each new year, our ambitions grow, resulting in our successive development which goes beyond our achievements in science. We are modernising and further developing the University’s infrastructure, and cooperating with an ever-increasing number of partners and contractors. Our lecture halls, classrooms, and halls of residence are being prepared to accommodate an increasing number of students. Each year, we welcome new students, providing them with a friendly, inspiring place of study, and an attractive range of courses taught on land and at sea.
Our students have at their disposal superbly equipped specialist laboratories and simulators, including a planetarium, as well as a modern Sports and Recreation Centre. Soon, we will connect the new building to what will be the second stage of this investment project, a new student residence, which will be built within the University campus.
For the needs of the science and business sector, we have also opened the modern Centre for the Offshore Industry. Offshore – the area between land and sea – is the subject of our particular interest, as this rapidly developing sector of the maritime sector urgently requires skilled specialists. In all four faculties, we have launched study programmes which are to educate future managers of the offshore wind energy sector.
Gdynia Maritime University is much more than the beautiful walls of the University’s historic main building, or its world-famous training ships – Dar Młodzieży, Horyzont II and Imor. The University is all of us – our students who come here to gain knowledge and practical skills, the University lecturers who educate future generations, scientists engaged in research, as well as the numerous staff working in research and development and technical and administration roles. Gdynia Maritime University is also our graduates and the many guests that visit the campus or take part in the global science conferences and other events that we organise.
I would like to thank you for your interest in Gdynia Maritime University. Whether you are planning to begin a programme of study with us, join our staff, or are already part of our academic community, I trust that our website will provide you with the information you need.
