Captain Martyna Graban

I started out studying Navigation, and today I have the honour of being captain of the American research vessel R/V Nautilus, owned by the famous Dr Robert Ballard – the explorer who, among other things, discovered the wreck of the Titanic.
On board the Nautilus I work every day with scientists to explore the depths of the ocean, searching for the mysteries still hidden from us in the underwater world. Sometimes we find the treasures of nature, sometimes traces of history – but we are always guided by the spirit of exploration. Thanks to this, I feel that my work still carries the traditions of the sailors of old.
Modern shipping demands courage, knowledge, and proficiency in advanced technologies – skills I developed during my studies at what was then Gdynia Maritime Academy (today Gdynia Maritime University).
If you dream of a career at sea, don’t be afraid to dream big!
I am living proof that it is worth following your dreams – because life at sea, despite its challenges, can still be a truly wonderful adventure.
