Screening of Film on Inventor of GPS, Prof. Bradford Parkinson

The Rector of Gdynia Maritime University, Professor Adam Weintrit, invites you to attend a screening of a film on Professor Bradford Parkinson, the father of the GPS, on Tuesday 28th November 2023 at 6 pm at the Faculty of Navigation.

Professor Parkinson, an American engineer and inventor, currently Emeritus Professor at Stanford University, California, personally directed the launch of the first GPS satellites into orbit, and coordinated the launch and testing of GPS before it was put into service.

As a Stanford University professor, he developed a range of innovative applications for GPS, including the automatic landing of a commercial Boeing 737 aircraft using only GPS.

Professor Parkinson is the author of a two-volume study entitled "GPS Theory and Applications" and co-author of more than 80 technical publications.

The year 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of the launch of GPS. In recognition of the Professor's revolutionary contribution to the development of technology and all forms of transport, as well as the creation of the basis for an epochal change in the way the world and society work in the 20th and 21st centuries, through leading the team responsible for the creation of the first GPS-NAVSTAR global positioning system, the Senate of Gdynia Maritime University passed a resolution on 16 November 2023, conferring an honorary doctorate on Professor Bradford Parkinson, the father of GPS. The ceremony for the conferral of the doctorate honoris causa will take place in 2024.

The screening for the film on the life and work of this outstanding scientist and inventor will take place in the main auditorium at the GMU Faculty of Navigation.
