Horyzont II Heads for Spitsbergen

On 26 August 2025, GMU’s training and research vessel Horzyzont II headed to Spitsbergen for the final time during this year’s sailing season.

The 18 2nd-year student cadets from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and 2 student cadets from the Faculty of Navigation, together with their tutors, were seen off from the quay in Gdynia by Dr Sambor Guze, Deputy Rector for Education and Student Affairs, and Captain Dariusz Jellonnek, Director of the Maritime Operations Department.

Under the command of Captain Ryszard Durlik, the Horyzont II set sail, along with its cargo, from the Cutter Quay in Gdynia. Over the following days, it is scheduled to reach the locations of Polish polar research stations. The first stop is planned at Hornsund, where a group of 18 polar researchers from the Institute of Geophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences will board the ship. Horyzont II will call at Longyearbyen and Ny-Ålesund before returning to Longyearbyen, and then proceeding to Hornsund. From there, the ship will embark on its return voyage to Gdynia.

As part of the Spitsbergen expedition, Horyzont II, in addition to its training role, also serves as a supply ship delivering cargo to the research stations, including food, fuel, as well as materials essential for the operation of the stations and scientific equipment. Additionally, the ship will be involved in the rotation of the scientific teams stationed at the various research bases in the Arctic.

Horyzont II is expected to return to Gdynia on Tuesday, 16 September 2025.
