Professor Janusz Zarębski has been an employee of Gdynia Maritime University since 1978. From 1997 to 2005, he held the post of head of the Marine Radioelectronics Department, and since 2005, he has headed the Marine Electronics Department. For the duration of the 2002-2005 and 2008-2012 terms, he served as a member of the Gdynia Maritime Academy senate, from 2012 to 2016 as Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, and from 2016 to 2020 as rector of Gdynia Maritime University.

Professor Zaręski gained a Master of Engineering in Electronic Apparatus in 1978 at the Faculty of Electronics of Gdansk University of Technology.  He then went on to complete a doctorate in electronic systems in 1987, also at the Gdansk University of Technology. In 1997, he was awarded a postdoctorate in electronics by the Scientific Council of the Electronic Technology Institute in Warsaw, for his dissertation entitled “Modelling, Simulation and Measurement of electrothermal waveforms in semiconductor components and electronic circuits”.

In 2008, he was conferred the academic title of Professor of Technical Science by the President of Poland.

Research and publications

Professor Zarębski has organised and led the  Science Committee of the National Electronics Conference. He is the author or co-author of more than 500 scientific works, a substantial number of which have been published in leading international journals. His work includes two monographs, six textbooks and academic scripts and 13 patents. He has also headed five State Committee for Scientific Research sponsored projects. Since 1997, he has been a member of the Microelectronics Section of the Polish Academy of Sciences' Electronics and Telecommunications Committee, and from 2005 of the Association of Polish Inventors and Rationalists and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He is a member of the scientific committees of two Polish journals, two periodic conferences in Poland and three more abroad. He has supervised the completion of five doctorates and reviewed five doctoral dissertations, and was frequently chosen as a reviewer in proceedings for the conferral of postdoctorate degrees and the academic title of professor.

He is the author of inventions awarded a gold medal at the 53rd Global Innovation Exhibition - Scientific Research and Modern Technology "Brussels Eureka" (2004) and a bronze medal at the 6th Edition of the International Inventions Fair "Innowacje" (2005).

From Maritime Academy to Maritime University

The most notable successes of Janusz Zarébski's time as rector (2016-2020) were the achievement of University status and the subsequent change of the name of Gdynia Maritime Academy to Gdynia Maritime University in 2018 and the incorporation of the Maritime Institute into the structure of the University in 2019. A further achievement was the organisation of the Independence Voyage in 2019/2020, during which the training sailing ship, the "Dar Młodzieży", called at 23 ports in 18 countries around the world in celebration of the centenary of Poland's regaining of independence. Professor Janusz Zarębski has received the Rector of Gdynia Maritime Academy/Maritime Higher School Award 20 times. He has also received the award of the Minister of Infrastructure - on two occasions, the awards of the Minister of Transport and the Maritime Economy, as well as being presented with Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, a Gold Medal for Long Service, the Silver Cross of Merit, the National Education Commission Medal and the Meritorious Maritime Personnel Decoration.
