Professor Józef Lisowski, DSc(Eng)

Academic Background

Professor Lisowski was born on 10th September 1943 in Łukowa near Lublin. He is a graduate of Gdansk University of Technology, where he gained a master's degree in electrical engineering in 1967, a doctorate in technical sciences in 1973, and a doctor of science degree in 1979. In 1989, he was granted the academic title of professor of technical sciences. From 1967 until 1980, he was a member of staff at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at Gdansk University of Technology and, since 1980, he has worked at the faculty of Electrical Engineering at Gdynia Maritime University. During the years 1198-2013, he also worked as a full professor at the Faculty of Electrical and Marine Engineering at the Naval Academy in Gdynia.

Rector of the Maritime Higher School

During the years 189-1996 and 2002-2008, he was chosen five times as the rector Gdynia Maritime Higher School and Gdynia Maritime Academy.

From 1980 to 2017, he was the head of the Department of Ship Automation, and from 2013 to 2016, organiser and head of the Doctoral School in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering.

Professor Józef Lisowski is a specialist with outstanding competence in the field of automation, electronics and electrical engineering, specialising in marine electro-automation. His research interests included the automation of optimal and adaptive control of ship movement and in particular, the synthesis of computer algorithms for the safe control of ships in situations of collision avoidance, using artificial intelligence, static and dynamic optimisation methods, and differential, positional and matrix game theories.

Scientific Publications

He is the author of 280 scientific publications, including 11 books, such as “A Ship as an Object of Automated Control”, “Ship Bow Thrusters”, “Ship Anti-collision Systems”, “Fundamentals of Automation”, “Optimisation Methods”, as well as 12 scientific monographs and 4 patented inventions. Within the Web of Science Database, his word comprises 48 scientific papers, with a total number of 198 citations, and an H-index of 10, and in the Research Gate database 129 publications, 831 citations and an H-index of 15.

He has taught many generations of ship engineers and supervised 11 doctorates of candidates from Poland, Algeria, and Vietnam and more than 580 MSc(Eng) and BSc(Eng) theses.

Teaching and Scientific Grants

Professor Lisowski is a lecturer on BSc(Eng) degree programmes in electrical engineering and navigation and transport, and on master’s and doctoral degree programmes on optimization. He also teaches game theory within the disciplines of automation, electronics and electrical engineering at postgraduate level, as well as leading engineering, master’s and doctoral graduate seminars within electrical engineering.

He has conducted 26 grant-funded research projects, including the implementation of an EMOS Ship Monitoring and Control System on board 24 Navy and merchant vessels.

As a visiting professor, he has lectured at maritime universities in  Australia, China, Finland, Ireland, Japan, Germany, Nigeria, USA and Vietnam.

In 2006, in recognition of his contribution to the development of polish maritime education, the City Council of Tczew granted him the title of Honorary Citizen.

Professor Lisowski is an honourable member of the following maritime associations: The Master Mariners’ Association, the Association of Senior Marine Mechanic Officers and the Association of Marine Electrical Engineers.

He is also a member of Scientific Committees of several scientific journals, including Polish Maritime Research; TransNav – the International Journal on Marine Navigation and Safety of Sea Transportation; Journal of Automation, Electronics and Electrical Engineering; International Journal of Transport Development and Integration.

Decorations and Awards

Professor Lisowski has been awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta- 2002; Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta – 1994; The Gold Cross of Merit –  1987; Medal for Lengthy Service – 2015; National Education Commission Medal – 1986; Gold Badge for Meritorious Maritime Personnel – 1985; Pomerania Medal – 2004; Maritime and Colonial League Cross – 2007; Medal of the Mayor of Gdansk – 2007; Eugeniusz Kwiatkowski Medal – 2007; Medal of the Mayor of Gdynia – 2008. He is a collector of maritime and education medals (795).
