Professor Andrzej Napieralski, PhD, DSc(Eng)

Research Work in Poland and Around the World

Professor Andrzej Napieralski has worked at Lodz University of Technology since 1973. In 1977 he defended his doctoral dissertation with honours at Lodz University of Technology. In January 1989 he defended his Doctor of Science dissertation in electronics at Warsaw University of Technology, and in May 1989 in microelectronics at Université Paul Sabatier (UPS) in Toulouse, France. In 1984-1985, he lectured at the Institut des Télécommunications d’Oran in Algeria, before serving as associate professor at Laboratoire d’Automatique et d’Analyse des Systèmes du C.N.R.S. (LAAS) and Institut National des Sciences Appliquées (INSA) in Toulouse. In January 1995, he was granted the title of Professor of Technical Sciences. During the years 1992-1996, he was the Deputy Director of the Electronics Institute and in 1996 he opened the Department of Microelectronics and Information Technology, of which he is Head. In 2002-2008, he served as Deputy Rector for Promotion and International Cooperation. Professor Andrzej Napieralski is the author of 1131 publications.

Grants, Projects and Publications

Professor Napieralski has supervised 54 doctoral dissertations, of which six won the Council of Minister’s Award, one the Wydział IV Nauk Technicznych Polskiej Akademii Nauk Award [Fourth Faculty of Technical Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences award], one received a distinction, one placed first in a competition for the best doctoral dissertation in systems sciences, and two ABB awards. He is currently supervising more than a dozen doctorates. Professor Andrzej Napieralski has also supervised 637 masters and engineering theses, many of which received SEP or NOT awards, and three Honorary Doctoral Degrees. He has actively participated in international projects, taking part in 10 scientific research projects (one ESPRIT-BARMINT project, two COPERNICUS projects, two 5th European Union framework programmes: SEWING and REASON, two 6th CARE and PERPLEXUS framework programmes and three 7th EUCARD, TIARA and EDUMEMS framework programmes). He has also been involved in a NATO grant project and 8 TEMPUS projects (including three as a coordinator and contractor), and was a partner in the ERASMUS MUNDUS - LAMENITEC project. Under the SOCRATES programme, Professor Napieralski cooperates with higher education institutions in Denmark, France, Spain, Belgium, Finland, the UK and Switzerland. In Poland he has participated in 59 KBN grant projects (32 as project manager, including 20 as promoter), written reviews for 32 applications for posts or the title of professor, 35 reviews of post-doctoral works, including two foreign ones, one post-doctoral dissertation, 76 reviews of doctoral works (including 20 from abroad), one honorary doctorate review, as well as hundreds of books, articles, and conference papers. For 25 years, he has been the chair of the committee for the science and organisational international conference Mixed Design of Integrated Circuits and Systems – MIXDES. He is also an elected member of the Polish Academy of Sciences’ (PAN) Electronics and Telecommunications Committee (during the terms 1996-1998, 1999-2002, 2003-2006 and 2007-2010, 2011-2014, 2015-2019), Chair of the Microelectronics Section of the PAN Electronics and Telecommunications Committee (as of 2003), as well as a member of the IEEE, IMAPS, SEFI, Polish Association of Electricians (SEP), Polish Association of Theoretical and Applied Electronics (PTETiS), Polish Association of Inventors and Rationalists (SPWiR) and Polish Association of Sensorial Techniques (PTTS). In 1991, he was named a Senior Member of the IEEE.

International Career

From the year 2000 until 2009, he served as the Chair of the Polish Section of the IEEE ED Chapter, and from 2001 to 2009, editor of the IEEE EDS Newsletter on Scandinavia and Central Europe. In 2005, he was elected to the SEFI Administrative Council (Société Européen pour la Formation des Ingénieurs) as the organisation’s Polish representative. In 2012, he was elected chair of the URSI Electronics and Photonics Committee and deputy chair of the IEEE EDS-SRC Region 8 (for the terms 2013-2015, 2016-2018). In 2016, he was chosen as deputy chair of the National Committee for Cooperation with the International Union of Radio Science (URSI). During the years 2004-2008, he managed a project funded by the European Regional Development Fund for a “Microelectronics and Information Technology Research Centre”. The Centre opened on 19th September 2008. He was also the head of a project entitled “Lodz University of Technology Information Technology Centre”, which was funded by the European Regional Development Fund as part of Priority 13.1. of the Infrastructure and Environment Operational Program the Centre began operating in 2015. In 1995, Professor Andrzej Napieralski was awarded the Gold Cross of Merit, in 2000 the Knight’s Cross, in 2010 the Officer's Cross of Polonia Restituta, in 2002 the National Education Committee medal, in 2003 Belgium’s Commander’s Cross of the Order of Invention (Mérite d’Invention) and a Gold Honorary Badge of Merit from the Polish Association of Inventors and Rationalists (SPWiR). In 2004, he received a World Intellectual Property Organization gold medal for his achievements as an inventor. In 2005, he was awarded a gold honorary badge “For Meritorious Service to Inventiveness”.

Under Resolution no 214/XVI of the Senate of Gdynia Maritime University of 28th November 2019, Professor Andrzej Napieralski was awarded the title of Honorary Doctor of Gdynia Maritime University.
