Training on Ships

Preparation for work at sea must include a vocational training on the ship: theoretical knowledge is not enough to make a good navigation officer, electrician or engineer. Therefore, from the very beginning of its existence Gdynia Maritime Academy had its own vessels. The first one was the "Lwów", which in 1930 was replaced by the "Dar Pomorza".

Nowadays vocational trainings are held on the deep-sea sailing ship "Dar Młodzieży", which can accommodate 35 of the permanent crew, 6 lecturers and 136 students. The "Dar Młodzieży" has accomplished many interesting voyages on the seas and oceans and is enthusiastically welcomed and admired in all the ports all over the world. This sailing ship has taken part in many races winning many important awards.

Complementary to the training on the sailing ship are trainings on instrumental and merchant vessels. Radar and manoeuvre trainings were previously organized on the ships "Horyzont" and "Zenit", which were replaced by the „Horyzont II”, equipped with the most advanced technology devices and instruments. She can accommodate 57 of the crew, students and scientists in single and double cabins.  She is also adapted to carry cargo and to conduct research on the sea, which is realized, among others, during her regular voyages to Spitsbergen.

Students of GMA have their trainings also on merchant ships, bulk carriers, modern container ships, tankers and passenger ships. This is possible thanks to polish and foreign ship-owners, who offer them such trainings.

Within the Erasmus programme, students are also sent abroad to do their placement in the collaborating institutions, firms, organizations in the European countries for the period from three months up to a full academic year. The university can also send its students for their placement through the Polish institutions specialized in organizing placements abroad.
