Tczew Maritime School, 1920s. The 101 years of history of the Gdynia Maritime University began with the founding of the Maritime School by order of General Józef Leśniewski's on 17th June 1920.

A lesson in the Faculty of Navigation at the Tczew Maritime School in the 1920s. 82 students were admitted to the School's first academic year. Classes began on 23rd November 1920.

8th December 1920 - following consecration of the flag raised on the Maritime School building, School staff and guests gathered for a celebratory goose dinner - the start of a School tradition.

In the rope works workshop, 1920s. Studying at the Maritime School was by no means easy. Classes were held Monday to Saturday, from 8:00am until late afternoon and often evening.

During the 1930/1931 academic year, a new training ship, the frigate Dar Pomorza, replaced the Lwów.

The State Maritime School in Gdynia, 1920s. The new School building benefited from physics, electrical engineering, chemistry, and commodity science offices, as well as workshops for deviation, navigation, radioelectronics, and radiotelegraphy with a short-wave broadcasting station.

16th September 1934, the training sailing ship Dar Pomorza sets off on its first circumnavigation of the globe with 10 people on board – among them, 11 2nd-year navigation students and 58 first-year candidates.

The Maritime School survived WWII in exile in Southampton on the campus of the local University College.

Polish Education in Navigation continued in Southampton during 1940-1943, after which the Maritime School was relocated to London.

An instrument ship, the Horyzont, was handed over to the Gdynia State Maritime School in 1962 on the decision of the Minister of Shipping Stanisław Darski.

Change of name on the school building, 1969. In 1968, after 60 years of service, the State Maritime School was merged with the State Marine Fishing School and became the Higher Gdynia Maritime School.

In the year 2000, a new research training ship, the Horyzont II, was added to the Maritime School's float.

The School changes its name to Gdynia Maritime Academy, 2001.

On 20th May 2018, the Dar Młodzieży set off from the harbour in Gdynia on the Independence Voyage – for the 2nd time in its history the frigate successfully circumnavigated the globe, leaving in its wake 38,000 nautical miles during 313 days at sea.

On 1st September 2018, under a Regulation of the Minister for Maritime Economy and Inland Navigation, the Academy became Gdynia Maritime University.

On 1st October 2019, by decision of the Minister of Science and Higher Education, the Maritime Institute was incorporated into Gdynia Maritime University.

GMU student members of the Guard of Honour for the academic year 2021/2022. Today's University comprises four rapidly developing Faculties: Navigation, Marine Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Management and Quality Science, and has more than 4000 students. All faculties have the right to award doctoral degrees.

The Faculty of Navigation. Designed in 1936 as a "Sailor's House" by Bohdan Damiecki and Tadeusz Sieczkowski, two young architects from Gdynia. On 1st January 1968, the building was incorporated into the Maritime School.

Radar navigation simulator laboratory in the Faculty of Navigation. The laboratory comprises four separate navigation bridges and a room with an instructor's console, which doubles as a briefing and seminar room.

The astronavigation laboratory is equipped with a planetarium - a celestial sphere simulator. An 8m wide dome screen can display a picture of half of the sky as visible from any location on earth.

GMU Offshore Centre – the University's most recent investment will be a vital research and education facility for the country's developing offshore wind sector.
