GMU up 10 places in higher education institution rankings for 2021
The 2021 Higher Education Institution Rankings, as compiled by the Perspektywy Education Foundation, have now been released. And it’s good news for the Gdynia Maritime University which for the third year running has improved upon its previous ranking. This year sees the University up ten places on last year in the Academic Institutions Rankings, at 61-70 place, and there is an improvement of 4 places in the Technical Institutions Rankings in which GMU is currently ranked 19th in Poland.
The Academic Institutions Rankings are one of the most extensive, transparent educational ranking systems in the world. Institutions are assessed according to a total of twenty-seven indicators, grouped into the following areas: Prestige, Graduate Employment Outcomes, Academic Potential, Research Output, Study Conditions, Innovation, and Internationalisation.
The 2021 Perspektywy Higher Education Institution Rankings are made up of four mutually complementary league tables which reflect the different missions of institutes of higher education in Poland.
The first of these is the Academic Institutions Rankings. This includes almost a hundred higher education centres (not including art institutions) that have the right to award PhDs. Then there is the Private Institutions Ranking, the Public Vocational Colleges Rankings, and the Academic Fields Rankings which cover seventy-one academic fields, including separate rankings for medical studies and engineering.
The integrity of the rankings is the responsibility of the Foundation’s Chapter chaired by Professor Michał Kleiber, former President of the Polish Academy of Science and Vice-President of the European Academy of Science and Art.
This year the Gdynia Maritime University was assessed more favourably in respect of 2020 across the full spectrum of indicators included in the report, including:
- assessment by academic staff - increased from 0.98 to 1.42;
- effectiveness in gaining external funding for research - increased from 17.09 to 81.02;
- awarding of degrees and academic titles - increased from 24.66 to 31.40;
- volume of published works - increased from 5.17 to 37.44;
- number of foreign students - increased from 3.15 to 3.71;
- number of lecturers from abroad - increased from 14.96 to 19.34;
- student exchanges (the number of students taking part in student exchanges abroad) - increased from 10.6 to 18.83.
There were also improvements noted in the assessment of two fields of study conducted at Gdynia Maritime University. Transport, within the Faculty of Navigation - currently ranked in 10th place, up two places on the previous year. Electronics and Telecommunications, within the Faculty of Electrical Engineering - currently in 10th place having been ranked 11th in 2020.
The Higher Education Institutions Rankings are aimed at helping applicants to higher education to decide what and where to study, and given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, such information is now more valuable than ever. Often removed from the more traditional sources of information, and tired of distance learning, young people are eager to gain admission to forward-thinking study programmes at the “university of their dreams”. The rankings are instrumental in helping them to make an important decision for their future.
The annually published results are also equally valuable to the wider academic community, as thanks to a consistent methodology of assessment the rankings provide an evaluation of the progress made by each centre of study.
