GMU Representatives Attend World Maritime Day Event

University Rector Adam Weintrit and the Deputy Rector for Education, Dr Sambor Guze, were in Warsaw on Tuesday 12th October at the invitation of the Minister of Infrastructure, Andrzej Adamczyk, to attend an event held for World Maritime Day.

The International Maritime Organisation has announced 2021 as a year dedicated to the raising of raising awareness of the crucial role of seafarers in world trade and increasing their visibility. The occasion was attended by ambassadors and charge d'affairs, as well as other representatives of embassies and consulates of IMO member states. Also present were representatives of seaports, the Polish Register of Shipping, and Polish higher maritime education institutions.

Minister Grzegorz Witkowski highlighted the important role played by Gdynia Maritime University and Szczecin Maritime Academy, where approximately 8000 people, including many women and foreign students, are currently attending programs of study. He also drew attention to their leading positions in the institutions of higher maritime education rankings. The Minister also mentioned the Polish Register of Shipping (PRS), which has been active internationally for more than 80 years. The PRS is the body responsible for the classification of ships and one of the twelve members of the prestigious IACS Association (International Association of Classification Societies).
