e-Business Scientific Circle Sails on Nest

GMU students onboard the yacht "Nest"

A group of student members of the e-Business scientific circle from the Faculty of Management and Quality Science spent three days (27-29 June) onboard the University’s flagship yacht “Nest” sailing around the Bay of Gdansk.

With the weather on their side and in good spirits, the excursion was a great success and provided ample learning opportunities. The first stop was the anchorage in Reda, where, making good use of the weather, the group swam in the sea before exploring the rewsko lagoon with the help of the onboard dinghy.

After weighing anchor the following day, the "Nest" came across a drifting fishing boat in the open waters of Gdansk Bay. The crew reported their find to the Marine Search and Rescue Service and, on request of the operator on duty, remained with the fishing boat until the Search and Rescue vessel arrived to tow it to safety in Rewa. An unexpected adventure, the incident also proved to be an educational experience. The students, many of who were sailing on a yacht for the first time, had the opportunity to familiarise themselves with radio telecommunication procedures and the process of cooperation with the Marine Rescue Coordination Centre.

Next, the "Nest" visited the port of Hel for the town’s annual holiday celebrations. One event connected with the holiday is the traditional blessing of cutters, fishing boats, and yachts. The Nest and its crew happily took part, welcoming on board for a short but very pleasant visit head parish priest Father Ireneusz Główczewski OFM. Sadly, time was short, and the Nest returned from Hel to Gdynia, where the crew disembarked.

Back on land, all students agreed the excursion was a great adventure and they look forward to taking to the water on the "Nest" again.
