Elections Held for Regional Representative to IAMU International Executive Board
In view of the end of the term of office of GMU in the work of the International Association of Maritime Universities, elections have been held among IAMU members from the institutions in Europe and Africa Region 1. For the year 2023 to 2024, Gdynia Maritime University will be succeeded by the University of Rijeka, Croatia.
The elections and a general meeting of the members took place yesterday online and were led by GMU Rector Professor Adam Weintrit and the Rector's plenipotentiary for IAMU affairs, Associate Professor Dr Adam Przybyłowski.
A total of five institutions ran for nomination to the honourable function, namely:
- Kherson State Maritime Academy (Ukraine)
- King Abdulaziz University Jeddah, Faculty of Maritime Studies (Saudia Arabia)
- National University - Odesa Maritime Academy (Ukraine)
- Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy (Bulgaria)
- The University of Rijeka, Faculty of Maritime Studies (Croatia)
Each institution presented to the group its potential, achievements, and action plans for IAMU. Each presentation was followed by questions and a discussion. The winning institution, the University of Rijeka's Faculty of Maritime Studies, received 56 per cent of the vote.
Rector Professor Adam Weintrit congratulated the winners and wished them success in their involvement in the work of IAMU and the continuation of the initiatives undertaken by the University. He also stressed that the goal of the entire maritime community in the light of today's challenges should be to strengthen and develop international cooperation.
