New Students Take Part in Regatta

On Saturday 7th October, the day of the inauguration of the new Academic Year, the University’s yachts, Nest and Almak, took part in the 72nd edition of the “Regatta for the Blue Ribbon of Gdansk Bay”.

The regatta went ahead despite extremely difficult weather conditions, including storm warnings. For this reason, the organisers decided not to allow multi-hull and sword yachts to take place, and the start of the race was delayed by a few hours to allow the weather to improve.

The two GMU crews taking part in the event fared very well. In the overall ranking of 67 yachts participating in the race, the s/y Nest, captained by Krzysztof Zygmański, a member of staff of the University,   took 25th place, and the s/y Almak, captained by a graduate of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Aleksander Grono, placed 30th. Considering the competition from professional racing yachts with professional crews on board, as well as the stormy weather conditions, the results of our teams are certainly worthy of recognition.

Especially since of the 13 persons representing our University, as many as 10 are students, and 7 are newly admitted first-year students. The remaining participants are a member of staff and a volunteer who actively cooperates with the University’s Sailing and Water Sports Centre, University Professor at the University of Silesia, Ewa Bartos.

The number of newly accepted students keen to take part, most of whom were sailing for the first time, and in difficult weather conditions, is a sign of an excellent outlook for the next sailing season.
