Public Consultation on Cycling in Gdynia

A public consultation was held at Gdynia Maritime University on cycling in Gdynia organised in collaboration with the local City Council.

More than 140 GMU and UBA Gdynia students gathered in the T. Meissner hall to hear presentations on the currently developed cycle strategy for Gdynia for the years 2023-2030. The debate was opened by HM Rector Professor Adam Weintrit and Deputy Major of Gdynia Development, Marek Łucyk. Taking part as moderators were GMU Associate Professor Dr Adam Przybyłowski and Justyna Suchanek of the Sustainable Mobility Office of the City Council's Department of Investment.

Students took an active part in the debate thanks to the web-based platform Particity. The results of participants' responses to the questions posed appeared on the screen in real-time, and a current group of expert panellists commented on the student's responses. The panellists included:

  • Marika Domozych - Radna Miasta Gdyni
  • Dominik Makurat - a doctoral candidate at Gdansk University
  • Filip Malata - GMU Chancellor
  • Paulina Szewczyk - Gdynia City Council Spatial Planning Office
  • Marcin Wołek - Gdansk University Associate Professor and Deputy of Gdynia City Council.

The discussion raised the topic of increasing cooperation between GMU and the city authorities in improving the safety of cyclists and cycling infrastructure around the campus. Rector, the Chancellor and the Director of the currently built GMU Sports Complex, Dr Andrzej Lachowicz, assured students that the building will certainly include a safe place to store bicycles, an issue which according to those present is the most desirable change in the current infrastructure that would encourage them to travel by bike more frequently.

An earlier study conducted among a representative group of students showed that more than two-thirds of them have their own bikes. The results obtained during the consultation paint a positive outlook for two-wheelers as a method of travel in the future.
