Wednesday 8 May 2024, saw the start of the Polish-German 19th Polish-German Student Seminar entitled "Managing Cultural Diversity in Europe", organised by Gdynia Maritime University and Hochschule Bremerhaven under the patronage of the Rectors of both universities.
The seminar will be held over the next two weeks, with GMU hosting students from Hochschule Bremerhaven during the first week (08 - 14/05/2024), and GMU students making their way to Bremerhaven for the second week (21 – 28/05/2024), where they will continue sessions with their German counterparts.
The seminar was opened by HM Rector Professor Adam Weintrit, who welcomed all the participants and reminded them of the longstanding cooperation between GMU and Hochschule Bremerhaven.
Traditionally, ten students from each of the institutions take part in the seminar. This year, the University is also happy to welcome two professors from the German University, Professor Gerhard Feldmeier and Professor Hans Rummel.
The seminar's programme of events includes lectures in English given by the teaching staff at both universities, meetings with leading university staff and student organisation representatives, as well as visits to Polish and German companies.
The first part of the seminar in Gdynia will include the following interesting lectures:
- Artificial intelligence - Professor Ireneusz Czarnowski
- Managing Cultural Diversity in Europe, part I - Professor Gerhard Feldmeier
- Food as the main threat to human health - Dr Joanna Newerli-Guz
- More than words – the role of interpersonal communication in business (interactive lecture) - Dr Agnieszka Czarnecka
In addition to its scientific and educational goals, the seminar aims to familiarise the Polish and German students with each other's universities and encourage them to join programmes of study at partner institutions as part of the Erasmus+ scheme, as well as introducing them to the history and culture of the two regions of Pomerania and Bremen.
Various attractions have been prepared to support the integration of those taking part from the two universities, including:
- integration at the student bar Bukszpryt, organised by the GMU Student Parliament;
- visits to the planetarium and the simulators at the GMU Faculty of Navigation;
- a tour of modernist Gdynia,
- a visit to Malbork castle,
- a joint tour of the most important historic sites in Gdańsk.
