Gdynia Celebrates its 98th Anniversary

On 10 February 2024, at the Monument to Maritime Poland, Gdynia marked the 98th anniversary of the founding of the city. The ceremony was attended by members of parliament, local government authorities, law enforcement, and rescue services, and crowds of local residents. A ceremonial atmosphere was provided by an honorary military guard and the orchestra of the Marine Division of the Border Guard.

The event was attended by HM The Rector of Gdynia Maritime University, Professor Adam Weintrit, accompanied by GMU standard bearers. Gdynia, an academic city, has been the home of our University and the home port of the tall ship “Dar Młodzieży” and the training vessel “Horyzont II” for 94 years.

Celebrations began with a military salute, an inspection of the Border Guard Marine Division, and a rendition of the national anthem.

The Chair of Gdynia City Council, Joanna Zielińska, summarised the history of the area from the time before our era until the construction of the port in Gdynia.

The ceremony came to a close with the laying of flowers at the monument and the procession of the Guard of Honour.
