GMU Wins First Gold in Omega Sport Class of Polish Sailing Championships
The gold medal in the Polish Omega Sport class, the Baltic Cup, and the leading position in the Polish Cup are the latest achievements of Gdynia Maritime University yacht sailing teams. POL-654, a GMU crew comprising Dr Jędrzej Charłępowicz, Bartosz Sadowski and Bartosz Mach won the gold medal.
The last two weekends of August 2024 saw intense rivalry in an Omega class sailing competition. The fifth round of the Polish Cup took place on 24 and 25 August in Ustka, and less than a week later, in Dąbki, the sixth round of the Polish Championship was also held. In addition, both events included races as part of the Baltic Cup.
Taking part in these races were GMU yachts manned by teams:
- POL-654 – competing in the Sport category – Dr Jędrzej Charłampowicz, Bartosz Sadowski, Bartosz Mach
- POL-655 – competing in the Standard category – Kinga Brzóska, Alicja Komorowska, Igor Kamiński and Wiktor Kreft.
On the first day of the race, four races were held. On the second day, due to a wind of more than 30 knots, the sailing yachts of the Omega Standard category did not take to the water. Of the 21 teams starting in the Omega Sports category, only eight completed the race, including POL-654, which came in second place (Dr Jędrzej Charłompowicz, Bartosz Sadowski, and Bartosz Mach). In the Standard category, our crew (Kinga Brzóska, Alicja Komorowska, and Igor Kamiński) finished in 7th place.
Further sailing rivalry took place in Dąbki. Almost 50 yachts (25 in the Sport category and 23 in the Standard category) took part in the Polish Championship. During the regattas, the crews sailed in conditions varying from a light breeze to a strong wind of more than 20 knots. All 12 races were completed.
In the Sports category, GMU representatives won the first gold medal of the Omega Sport class of the Polish Championship in the history of our University! The POL-654 crew of Dr Jędrzej Charłąmpowicz, Bartosz Sadowski, and Bartosz Mach, won the title by winning the Baltic Cup and are now in first place in the Polish Cup!
The result of the second GMU team, POL-655 - King Brzóska, Alicja Komorowska, and Wiktor Kreft - was also a great success. Despite a problematic first day, in which they finished in 14th place, the team managed to move up to 5th place during the next races. This is extremely promising for next season.
Congratulations to both our teams!
