HM The Rector An Honorary Guest at the AMET Global Maritime Summit

Today, 2 July 2024, HM The Rector of GMU, Professor Adam Weintrit, is taking part in the AMET Global Maritime Summit (AGMS 2024) in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.

Taking place alongside the Summit is the AMET Global Maritime Awards (AGMA 2024) ceremony for the presentation of awards by the Dr. J Ramachandran Foundation, the founder and Rector of the Academy of Maritime Education and Training (AMET) University.

The AMET Global Maritime Summit plays a pivotal role in bolstering the maritime sector's contribution to global development. With over 80% of the volume of global trade in goods being transported by sea, the Summit serves as a vital platform for enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of the maritime industry by fostering the latest technological innovations in the areas of autonomous ships, advanced navigation systems, and digital logistics solutions.

The event is organised by the Academy of Maritime Education and Training (AMET) University, the first Indian maritime university dedicated to maritime education, training, and research. 

 

An inaugural address will be given by Shri Shyam Jagannathan, IAS, Director General of Shipping Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Govt. of India. 

As an honorary guest, a special 'Guest of Honour Address' will be given by HM The Rector, Professor Adam Weintrit, who will also have the honour of presenting awards during the AGMA 2024 awards ceremony.


The main topic of the AMET Global Maritime Summit 2024 is Charting the Future of Maritime Excellence. 

The event includes two concurrent sessions, the first of which is made up of two-panel discussions:

  • Navigation Change: Bridging the Gap between STCW Amendments for Resilient Seafaring
  • Climate Change and Futuristic Technologies for Maritime Resilience

The second consists of four concurrent technical sessions:

  • Maritime Education and Training
  • Maritime Technology Innovations
  • Maritime Management Strategies
  • Maritime Sustainability

Experts taking part in the Summit will discuss the need for sustainable shipping practices and strict adherence to environmental regulations, which are essential for reducing the industry's carbon footprint and protecting our oceans. 

The integration of technological innovations such as digital transformation, Artificial Intelligence, Block Chain, and automation is expected to revolutionise maritime operations, which will enhance efficiency, safety and decision-making processes.

The Summit will also see discussions on ensuring robust maritime security measures and strategies to combat piracy, vital for protecting maritime assets and maintaining safe operations. 

Further topics include the development of human capital through enhanced training programs, education and prioritising seafarer well-being, which is reflected in their daily work and is crucial for preparing maritime personnel to meet future challenges. 

AGMS 2024 will also look at advancements in ship design and engineering with a focus on next-generation vessels and the modernisation of existing fleets.


The Academy of Maritime Education and Training (AMET) is one of the 74 members of the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU), a global network of leading maritime universities providing Maritime Education and Training (MET) of seafarers for the global ship industry. The Chair of the Association during the 2023-2025 term of office is HM The Rector of Gdynia Maritime University Professor Adam Weintrit.
