Invitation to Attend the Ceremony for the Raising of the Flag During University Celebration Day

We would like to warmly invite Gdynia Maritime University staff, students, doctoral candidates, alumni and friends of Gdynia Maritime University to attend the ceremonial raising of the flag on the occasion of the 104th Anniversary of Maritime Education in Poland.

At 7:50 am, we will assemble in front of the main University building, and as per maritime tradition, at 8:00 am the Polish Merchant Navy flag to the sound of Dąbrowski’s Mazurek. Cherished for more than 100 years, the raising of the flag on the University building is the oldest and most beautiful tradition of our University.

This tradition is a distinctive honour for Gdynia Maritime University. In this way, we are continuing a tradition that began in 1920 when a flag was raised exceptionally on the building of the newly inaugurated Maritime School in Tczew, as the school did not yet have its own sail training ship. In 1930, the beginning of education was inaugurated at the School’s new campus in Gdynia, the location of today’s Gdynia Maritime University.

Each June, during University Celebration Day, GMU continues the beautiful tradition of the Maritime School in Tczew, paying its respects to the Polish flag. The sight of the flying flag, navy blue uniforms and the sound of the Polish Navy Orchestra is an essential part of the opening ceremony of every University Celebration Day. As in previous years, also taking part in the event is the Gdynia Maritime University Guard of Honour.

The raising of the flag will be followed by a Holy Mass at 9:00 am at the Redemptorist at the ‘Maritime’ church in Gdynia, address ul. Portowa 2. For all those interested in attending the mass, a free bus will leave from in front of the main University building at 8:40 am.
