University Awarded New Patent
The Polish Patent Office has granted exclusive rights to GMU for an invention entitled "Nanochitosan modified polyurethane foam - its characteristics, a manufacturing method, and use", which was registered as patent number 244905 on 22 March 2024. The creators of the invention are GMU Associate Professor Dr Joanna Brzeska and Agnieszka Piotrowska-Kirschling of the Faculty of Management and Quality Science.
The solution provides for a Nanochitosan modified polyurethane foam with sorption properties and a method for its production. Foams are used as sorbents in water treatment, in particular the removal of oil from micro-leaks and petroleum products that pollute the aquatic environment and harm flora and fauna.
Newly invented foams are used by seaports, sewage treatment plants, and by the emergency services. Those interested in the commercialisation and implementation of such products are manufacturing companies specialising in the production of innovative sorbents. One advantage of the new solution is the minimisation of hazardous shrimp waste from the food industry (ecological aspect).
The patented solution was nominated as part of the 11th "Eureka DGP - Discover Polish Inventions" competition.
