43 Years Ago Dar Młodzieży Set Sail on its Maiden Voyage
On 10 July 1982, Dar Młodzieży, set sail on its maiden voyage under the command of Captain Olechonowicz. Today is the 43rd anniversary of not only that historic event, but also the ship’s first time taking part in the Tall Ships Races.
The Dar Mlodzieży’s first outing at sea was not without its challenges. On 27 July, the German yacht Peter von Danzig made a distress call. The White Frigate raced to the rescue. A lifeboat transported a crew member with burn injuries following an explosion of an oven on board the ship to the infirmary on board Dar Młodzieży. The injured crew member was then airlifted to hospital and the Polish tall ship returned to the race. On 29 July, after covering 770 nautical miles, Dar Młodzieży crossed the finish line for the first time in its history, finishing in first place in Class A.
43 years later, more than 100 students from the Faculty of Navigation and Faculty of Marine Engineering are taking part in the Tall Ships Races as part of their training at sea.
The race has already got underway and we wish all those involved favourable winds.
