GMU Maritime Institute Receives Hydrographer’s Award 2025

On 27 June 2025, celebrations were held as part of World Hydrography Day. The main idea behind this initiative is to promote hydrography among the general public and to raise awareness of the role it plays in human activity at sea. A theme is defined each year to highlight issues related to the role of the hydrographic service in the maritime industry. The leading topic of 2025’s Hydrography Day is: Seafloor Mapping: Enabling Action for the Oceans.

In recognition of its merits and achievements in hydrographical measurements, the GMU Maritime Institute and the company MEWO S.A. were presented with the Hydrographer’s Award 2025 for their outstanding contribution to the bathymetric survey of Polish marine areas as part of the project entitled ‘Mapping Seabed Habitats of Polish Marine Areas Using Sonar Seafloor Mosaicking in the Years 2021–2023’. The project was implemented at the request of the Main Environmental Protection Inspectorate.

The award was presented by Commander Dariusz Beczek, Head of the Navy Hydrographic Office, and Commander Henryk Niter. Accepting the award on behalf of the Maritime Institute was Dr Radosław Opioła, Deputy Director of the Maritime Institute, and on behalf of MEWO S.A., Łukasz Gajewski.
