HM The Rector of GMU Passes on IAMU Chair Insignia to His Successor
During a sitting of the IAMU International Executive Board held from 25 February until 2nd March 2025 at the IAMU headquarters in Tokyo, the members of the Association elected its new chair.
The newly elected chair, Professor Shan Hongjun, the Rector of Dalian Maritime University in China, was presented with the IAMU insignia by HM The Rector of Gdynia Maritime University, Professor Adam Weintrit, Chair of the International Association of Maritime Universities during the term 2023-2025.
During the sitting, there was also a meeting with Dr Yohei Sasakawa, the Honorary Chair of IAMU and the president of the Japanese non-profit organisation The Nippon Foundation, the main sponsor of IAMU, which supports the statutory activity of the Association through providing research grants and more.
HM The Rector of Gdynia Maritime University, Professor Adam Weintrit, was a member of the International Executive Board (IEB) during the term 2020-2023 (extended by a year during to the Covid-19 pandemic), representing 41 member universities from the Europe and Africa region. During the same period, he also chaired the Academic Affairs Committee (AAC), one of the four IAMU Permanent Committees.
During HM The Rector Professor Adam Weintrit’s time as Chair of the International Association of Maritime Universities, eight new members joined the Association.
In 2023 joining IAMU were:
- Ordu Üniversitesi (Ordu, Turkey)
- University of Ljubljana (Ljubljana, Slovenia)
- University of Montenegro (Kotor, Montenegro).
In 2024, the Association’s new members were:
- Escola Superior Náutica Infante D. Henrique (Oeiras, Portugal)
- School of Maritime Studies, Centurion University of Technology (Ramchandrapur, India)
- South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences (Mikkeli, Finland)
- Sh. Yessenov Caspian University of Technology and Engineering (Aktau, Kazakstan)
- Antwerp Maritime Academy (Antwerp, Belgium).
During the Rector’s time in office as Chair of IAMU during the term 2023-2025, he chaired the IAMU General Assemblies on two occasions, on 16-20 October 2023 in Helsinki and on 7-8 October 2024 in Buzzard Bay, Massachusetts in the USA, as well as the IEB meetings that preceded them.
