University Takes Part in 101st Anniversary of Death of Joseph Conrad
On Monday, 4 August 2025, a ceremony was held on the South Pier in Gdynia to mark the 101st anniversary of the death of the outstanding Polish publicist and sailor, Joseph Conrad - the captain of the sailing ship Otago.
Taking part in the event were local government authorities, the Director of the Gdynia City Library, representatives of maritime associations, and the Polish Nautical Society.
Gdynia Maritime University was represented by the Deputy Rector for Education, Professor Sambor Guze, who, together with the University's Guard of Honour, laid flowers at the writer's monument.
A short summary of the biography and achievements of the author of many well-known works, such as Heart of Darkness and Lord Jim, was given by Professor/Captain Daniel Duda, an Honorary Doctor of Gdynia Maritime University, and Professor Marek Grzybowski, Head of the Polish Nautical Society.
Joseph Conrad Korzeniowski died on 3 August 1924. The monument to the writer in Gdynia by Zdzisław Kosedy and Wawrzyniec Samp was unveiled in 1976 and is shaped like a stylised sail reminiscent of a ship's figurehead, with a bust of the writer on the front side.
The event concluded with a group photograph taken in front of the monument commemorating the writer. The event was organised by Gdynia City Hall, Gdynia City Library, and the Polish Nautical Society.
