On 22 October 2026, the Faculty of Marine Engineering at Gdynia Maritime University hosted the 6th edition of Marine Engineer’s Day, an event for the Faculty's students, staff, alumni, and friends. The initiative, which originally began as a local celebration for Faculty students and staff, has developed over the years into an extensive undertaking comprising numerous scientific, educational, sporting, and integration activities delivered on an unprecedented scale.

The official opening of this year’s edition took place at 10:00 in the sports hall of the GMU Sports and Recreation Centre. The event was officially opened by the Deputy Rector for Science, Associate Professor Dariusz Barbucha, and the Dean of the Faculty of Marine Engineering, Professor Andrzej Miszczak. Activities associated with Marine Engineer’s Day began an hour earlier, however. The CSiR lecture hall hosted presentations by finalists in the Best Degree Dissertation competition, organised as part of the MechaPraca module. Alumni of the Faculty of Marine Engineering presented their work, with the final selection of winners made by students, University staff, the competition jury, and representatives of partnering enterprises.

The Grand Prix award of PLN 3,000, funded by the Rector, was won by Anna Zawistowska for her dissertation entitled ‘Development of FDM-based manufacturing technology for a wind turbine model nacelle and transmission’. Second place and an award of PLN 2,000, funded by the Dean of the Faculty of Marine Engineering, was awarded to Gaweł Duda. Additional commendations and prizes were presented to laureates by representatives of Remontowa Shipbuilding, PKP Szybka Kolej Miejska w Trójmieście Sp. z o.o., and the Nauta Shiprepair Yard (Stocznia Remontowa Nauta S.A.).

A key element of the event was also the Day with an Employer. In the main hall of the CSiR, 28 enterprises from the Pomeranian region – which have partnered with the Faculty of Marine Engineering for many years and employ its students and graduates – showcased their stands. Over the course of the four-hour fair, nearly one thousand Gdynia Maritime University students had the opportunity to establish direct contact with employers and obtain information regarding professional career paths.

Simultaneously, across various parts of the university campus, activities were conducted under the MechaFuture module. Pupils from invited secondary schools participated in workshops and laboratory demonstrations, learning about the specific nature of education and research activities at the Faculty of Marine Engineering. High attendance was also recorded at open lectures organised as part of the MechaWykłady series. In total, several hundred pupils and teachers took part in the educational events arranged by the Faculty.

During Marine Engineer’s Day, the competition for the Best Student Internship Report, organised under the MechaPraktyka initiative, was also concluded. The winners of this year’s edition were student pair Dominika Siemczuk and Maksymilian Hennig for their report on an internship undertaken at Orlen Serwis.

The event programme also featured sports highlights. The table tennis tournament for the Cup of the Dean of the Faculty of Marine Engineering, held as part of the MechaPong module, was attended by representatives of all five GMU faculties. The impressive cup – a handcrafted piece made by staff of the Faculty of Marine Engineering – went to Dr Piotr Ratuszniak representing the Faculty of Computer Science.

At 14:00, following the conclusion of the award ceremony, the official part of Marine Engineer’s Day drew to a close. Further activities moved to other buildings of the Faculty of Marine Engineering and the Bukszpryt Student Club, where students of all year groups competed in MechaTasks. The programme included, among other events, the Constructor Competition, a shanty competition, and a pub quiz. The hours-long contests concluded after 19:00 with the presentation of awards to winners and gifts to all participants.

In the evening, the social and integration part of the event commenced, attended by students, staff, and supporters of the Faculty. The gathering was held in a spirit of shared enjoyment, concluding a day filled with scientific, sporting, and social activities.
