On 10 February 2026, Gdynia celebrated its 100th anniversary. One of the most important events that took place on the first day of the planned year of celebrations was a ceremonial sitting of Gdynia City Council. Attending the event was HM The Rector of GMU, Professor Adam Weintrit. The session was led by the Chair of City Council, Tadesuz Szemiot, and Mayor of Gdynia, Aleksandra Kosiorek.

Also attending the event were representatives of the Polish and local government authorities, the military, the world of science, business, culture, and sport. Among the guests were: Polish President Karol Nawrocki, Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska, Marshall of the Senate, Barbara Nowacka, National Education Minister. Also in attendance were Hanna Wenda-Uszyńska, granddaughter of engineer Tadeusz Wenda, and Julita Maciejewicz-Ryś, granddaughter of Prime Minister Eugeniusz Kwiatkowski – guardians of their grandfathers’ legacy.

Our wonderful, beautiful, developing Polish Gdynia is one hundred years old! Today, we truly see these hundred years from the perspective of a city that is so important for the Polish state and for the entire Republic […]” said President of the Republic of Poland Karol Nawrocki in his commemorative address.

The President further highlighted the importance of Gdynia, saying:

All of this is also possible thanks to the fact that Gdynia is an important academic centre – not only for Poland, but for all of Europe – with Gdynia Maritime University, the Polish Naval Academy, and as such an important place on the cultural map of the Republic of Poland.

During the ceremony, Marshall of the Senate Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska presented City of Gdynia Officials with a Republic of Poland medal, reminding those present that the Senate designated 2026 as the Year of Gdynia.

As is tradition during ceremonial sittings of the City Council, Eugeniusz Kwiatkowski medals for ‘Outstanding service to Gdynia’ were also presented. This year is the 32nd year that the medals have been awarded. This year’s award recipients represented three pillars of Gdynia’s past and present: the blue economy, security, and culture. The Eugeniusz Kwiatkowski Medal for Outstanding Service to Gdynia was awarded to the Polish Naval Academy in Gdynia, the Gdynia Cotton Association, and the Polish Filmmakers Association.

The official part of the event concluded with a concert by renowned Polish composer and pianist Leszek Możdżer.
