On 17–18 September 2026, the Faculty of Management and Quality Science at Gdynia Maritime University hosted a training course devoted to scientific research methodology and developing cooperation with research centres in Poland and abroad. The sessions were conducted by Professor Wojciech Czakon, Dr h.c., from the Jagiellonian University, a specialist in strategic management and scientific research methodology.

The aim of the training was to develop the competences of Faculty staff and doctoral students in planning and conducting research, and to promote cooperation with external socio-economic partners aimed at commercialising research results. The event represented a continuation of activities serving to strengthen GMU’s scientific potential.

The first day's programme addressed key issues related to planning the research process: defining research objectives and scope, formulating hypotheses, and selecting methods, techniques, and tools. Procedural models applied in qualitative and quantitative research were discussed, alongside the principles of research sample design and participant recruitment methods. Significant attention was also given to ethics in social research, personal data protection, and principles of good research practice.

The second day of the training was dedicated to conducting research, collecting and verifying data, and selecting methods for their analysis. Participants were introduced to the application of methodological triangulation, as well as common errors in the selection of research tools and their consequences for the reliability of obtained results. The discussed topics were complemented by case studies, allowing participants to apply methodological knowledge to specific research problems.

Developing methodological practice forms the foundation for conducting sound research and producing high-quality scientific publications. Strengthening these competences also enhances the readiness of staff and doctoral students to deliver joint initiatives with domestic and international partners. Training of this type supports the internationalisation of GMU’s scientific activities and enhances the social and economic significance of the research conducted.

The event was organised under the project PROGRESS – Scientific and Research Development of Gdynia Maritime University in Management and Quality Sciences, headed by Dr Joanna Kizielewicz, Deputy Rector for International Cooperation. The organisation of the training was overseen by Dr Katarzyna Skrzeszewska, Assistant Professor in the Faculty's Department of Management and Economics.

The training was funded under the project co-financed by the Minister of Science as part of the Regional Excellence Initiative programme. Total project funding stands at PLN 1,551,000.00. Project reference: RID/SP/0023/2024/01.
