Gdynia Maritime University’s Metrological Infrastructure Included on Poland’s Research Infrastructure Map
On 5 August 2026, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education published an updated Polish Map of Research Infrastructure, listing the country’s most important unique research facilities, laboratories and systems. For the first time, Gdynia Maritime University is represented on the Map as a research centre.
The Map brings together research infrastructures with the highest potential for scientific excellence, consolidating research capacity in fields important to the development of science and the country. As part of the 2024–2026 update, GMU, through its Technology Transfer Office, submitted an application for its Metrological Infrastructure in the Field of Underwater Acoustics.
As part of the update, the Ministry reviewed the infrastructures that had been on the Map since 2020 and conducted a call for new infrastructures, subjecting applications to a detailed assessment involving members of the Advisory Team for the Polish Map of Research Infrastructure and nearly 300 Polish and international reviewers. Following the review, 61 of the 70 infrastructures included on the Map in 2020 remained, while a further 104 infrastructures were selected through the new call. The updated Map therefore contains 165 infrastructures considered strategically important to the country’s development.
In the field of technical sciences and energy, Metrological Infrastructure in the Field of Underwater Acoustics at Gdynia Maritime University holds a leading position. It is also the only infrastructure from the region included on the Map.
The GMU infrastructure featured on the Ministry’s list is the result of two projects aimed at strengthening research capabilities in underwater acoustics used in studying the sea. These include applications in offshore wind energy, oil and gas drilling platforms, subsea power cables, port expansion, fisheries and maritime transport.
Under the Polish Metrology programme, GMU carried out two projects between 2022 and 2026: Polish Metrology I, Development of a Concept for the Construction of Metrological Infrastructure in the Field of Underwater Acoustics at GUM, and Polish Metrology II, Development of Metrological Infrastructure Components in the Field of Underwater Acoustics at GUM. Both projects were carried out in partnership with the University of Gdańsk and Gdańsk University of Technology and in cooperation with the Central Office of Measures (GUM). Dr Karol Listewnik of the Department of Ship Electrical Power Engineering at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering was GMU’s project manager for both projects.
The inclusion of GMU’s research infrastructure on the Polish Map of Research Infrastructure recognises its research potential. As the Ministry has pointed out, two elements are crucial to achieving excellence in scientific research: the right human capital and modern research infrastructure.
Large-scale, strategic research infrastructures bring leading researchers and innovative enterprises together, supporting economic development and increasing the country’s social capital. For GMU, having excellent laboratories that meet the highest standards of research and education is therefore an important necessity for the University’s development.
