GMU Delegation Takes Part in Ceremony to Mark 106th Anniversary of Poland’s Marriage to the Sea
A University delegation took part in a ceremony to mark the 106th anniversary of Poland’s marriage to the sea in Puck. GMU was represented by HM The Rector, Professor Adam Weintrit, as well as students from: The GMU Guard of Honour, which provided the standard-bearer delegation and an escort for the laying of flowers.
The ceremonies traditionally began in Puck’s Market Square with a symbolic welcome for General Józef Haller. Participants then proceeded to the parish church in Puck, where a Holy Mass for Poland was celebrated. The Mass was presided over by the Archbishop of Gdańsk, Metropolitan Tadeusz Wojda.
At the conclusion of the liturgy, HM The Rector of GMU, Professor Adam Weintrit, was honoured with the Haller Ring, awarded by the President of the Maritime and River League, Dr Capt Andrzej Królikowski, in recognition of his contribution to Poland’s blue economy and to preserving maritime traditions.
The final item on the programme was a ceremony at the fishing harbour by the ‘marriage to the sea’ pillar, where speeches were given by Arkadiusz Marchewka, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Infrastructure, and Emil Rojek, Deputy Voivode of Pomerania. The celebrations concluded with the laying of flowers at the monument to General Józef Haller.
Gdynia Maritime University’s participation in this special anniversary reflects the University’s strong commitment to maritime traditions and to Poland’s history.
