GMU Granted Patent
The Patent Office of the Republic of Poland has granted Gdynia Maritime University exclusive rights to the invention titled ‘Mounting assembly for a multi-edge tool for finishing machining of post-weld surfaces, and a method for manufacturing the mounting assembly’, issuing patent PL 248317. The invention is the work of Dr Olga Łastowska, Assistant Professor in the Department of Engineering Sciences at the Faculty of Marine Engineering.
The patent covers a mounting assembly for multi-edge cutting tools used to finish different types of welds, as well as a method for manufacturing the assembly. The system comprises three main structural components and a stainless-steel guide for the cutting tool, fixed to the stationary table of a hydraulic machine. The manufacturing method uses a small number of straightforward, defined process steps to produce a mounting set suitable for a range of finishing tools in GMU’s portfolio. The solution is valued for its simple operation, speed, process cleanliness, and the mechanical properties achieved after finishing.
Showcasing the invention at the WARSAW METALTECH fair in Nadarzyn contributed to GMU’s nomination for Exhibitor of the Year 2025 in the category ‘Innovations in metalworking’: https://umg.edu.pl/en/news/2025/gmu-inventions-presented-warsaw-metaltech-technology-fair
The patented solution forms part of the University’s technology portfolio, complementing post-weld finishing tools developed by the Technology Transfer Centre (2020–2023) under the Innovation Incubator 4.0 [Inkubator Innowacyjności 4,0] programme and the Smart Growth Operational Programme 2014–2020 (Measure 4.4).
GMU welcomes collaboration with organisations interested in this innovative tool series from its portfolio.
