HM The Rector of GMU, Professor Adam Weintrit, and Captain Dariusz Jellonnek, Director of the Maritime Operations Department, attended the ceremony for the symbolic cutting of the first steel plates for the frigate Huragan (Hurricane). The event, which took place on 28 April 2028 at the PGZ Navy Shipyard in Gdynia, served as the inauguration of the construction of the third and final vessel built as part of the ‘Miecznik’ (Swordfish) programme – Poland’s project to acquire three new multi-role frigates for the Polish Navy.

Taking part in the ceremony were many guests, including Paweł Bejda, Secretary of State in the Ministry of Defence; Konrad Gołota, Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of State Assets; General Andrzej Kowalski, Deputy Head of the Office for National Security; Jarosław Ziemiański, Polish Navy Inspector; and Vice Admiral Krzysztof Jaworski, Commander of the Maritime Operations Centre.

Huragan, like the other two ships built by the programme, are a response to the Polish Navy’s needs regarding the defence of maritime waters and naval bases, carried out both by engaging surface, underwater, and coastal targets, and by conducting naval air defence as part of national and allied operations.

The name ‘Huragan’ is a reference to ORP Huragan, a planned Grom-class destroyer that was to be built in Poland before the Second World War.
