How Does the Global Shipping Industry Affect the Gdynia Community? An open lecture as part of the GMU lecture series marking Gdynia's centenary
On Thursday, 2 July 2026, at 18:00, the auditorium of the Faculty of Navigation at Gdynia Maritime University (Aleja Jana Pawła II 3) will host the next popular science lecture organised by the University as part of the series to mark the 100th anniversary of Gdynia.
The upcoming lecture, entitled ‘The Global Shipping Industry and Prospects for Gdynia: New Trends, Old Problems, and Big Money’, aims to show how the residents of Gdynia depend on the direction in which the world, and above all the maritime industry, is heading.
The lecture will be delivered by Associate Professor Krzysztof Wróbel, a staff member at the GMU Department of Navigation and a lifelong resident of Gdynia, who for a time combined his academic career with work on commercial and training vessels. His research interests focus on maritime transport issues: the human element in ensuring the safety of navigation and the concept of autonomous and unmanned ships (which only seemingly appears to be a contradiction).
Professor Wróbel will present a selection of trends that could shape the future of Gdynia as a coastal city, such as decarbonisation, autonomisation, and the growing popularity of ‘coolcation’. Together with the participants, he will attempt to imagine the impact these trends may have on the Gdynia community and discuss what can be done to prepare for their potential consequences.
The lecture series is organised jointly by Gdynia Maritime University, the Polish Naval Academy, WSB Merito University Gdynia, and the Eugeniusz Kwiatkowski University of Administration and Business in Gdynia, in cooperation with the City of Gdynia. The event is part of the city's centenary celebrations and aims to popularise knowledge and introduce residents to the research work carried out at Gdynia's universities.
Admission to the event is free.
