Orienteering Race Takes Place Inside GMU
Thursday, 19 March 2026, saw an orienteering race take place in the main GMU building. The event, which was organised by the Azymut 45 sports club, was held under the University’s patronage. 70 people took part, completing five courses of varying difficulty.
The task of participants was to reach, in the prescribed order, several control points located throughout the corridors of Gdynia Maritime University on six floors, confirm their presence at each point using the contactless SportIdent (Air) system, and return to base in the T. Meissner Auditorium.
A map of the GMU main building was specially prepared for the event to a scale of 1:1500 in accordance with the international cartographic standard (ISInOM). All participants were given a map showing the locations of the control points at the start of the race. For the first time, a navigational map challenge at GMU took place indoors. The routes of previous orienteering events based at Gdynia Maritime University ran through the University’s outdoor grounds, part of the Grabówek district, and also the nearby forest.
The event was coordinated by Dr Piotr Kopacz of the Department of Navigation at the Faculty of Navigation.
