Sail Celebrating Gdynia’s Centenary Hung on Mast of Dar Młodzieży

A special flag celebrating the city of Gdynia’s 100th anniversary has been hung on the mast of the Dar Młodzieży – GMU’s sail training ship, which has represented the University for more than 40 years.

This event is of particular significance because the sail was hoisted by the youngest participants in sea training on board the ship – pupils from maritime secondary schools in Gdańsk, Szczecin and Kędzierzyn-Koźle. By taking this symbolic step at the very beginning of their journey towards becoming seafarers, they became part not only of the tradition of generations of maritime people associated with Gdynia and the Polish maritime economy, but also of Gdynia’s jubilee celebrations.

The celebratory sail was designed to remind us of the connection between Gdynia Maritime University and Gdynia – the city said to be ‘born of the sea and dreams’. It is also a metaphor for the path of development jointly experienced by GMU and Gdynia since the relocation of the University to the city in 1930. It is also a reminder that, for the tall ship, its home port of Gdynia is not merely an operational base, but also a symbol of its identity. Every return of the vessel to the Gdynia waterfront highlights the fact that Dar Młodzieży is an ambassador both for the city itself and for the Polish flag on the seas and oceans of the world.
