On 8 April 2026, a wreath-laying ceremony was held on the waters of Gdańsk Bay to mark the 85th anniversary of the death and the 25th anniversary of the scattering of the ashes of General Mariusz Zaruski – an outstanding figure in Polish sailing, an educator of young people, and one of the pioneers of maritime education in Poland.

General Mariusz Zaruski was not only an officer of the Polish Army, but also a sailor, mountaineer, teacher, and promoter of maritime education. His work played an important role in shaping the traditions of Polish maritime education and in the development of Gdynia as a maritime centre. He initiated numerous projects aimed at promoting sailing and educating the younger generation in a spirit of responsibility, courage, and service to Poland.

The ceremony was attended by representatives of the University, Hanna Pruchniewska, Mayor of Puck; Professor Daniel Duda, a long-serving Rector of Gdynia Maritime University; Dr Captain Andrzej Królikowski, President of the Maritime and River League; Professor Grzegorz Rutkowski, Chairman of the Master Mariners’ Association; representatives of the Polish Naval Academy in Gdynia and the Mariusz Zaruski Primary School in Puck, and others.

The delegations on board a vessel of the Maritime Office in Gdynia laid flowers on the waters of Gdańsk Bay in tribute to the General’s memory. GMU was represented by members of staff and students, who, on behalf of the entire academic community, cast a bouquet of white and red flowers onto the waters of the bay.

The ceremony was an expression of remembrance and respect for the legacy of General Mariusz Zaruski, whose work has secured him a lasting place in Polish maritime history and maritime education.
