On 21 May 2026 at 18:00, Gdynia Maritime University will host the second popular science lecture in a series organised as part of the celebrations marking the centenary of Gdynia. The event will take place in the auditorium at the Faculty of Navigation, 3 Jana Pawła II Avenue in Gdynia.

Entitled 'What Powers Ships? From Traditional Engines to the Green Technologies of the Future', the lecture will be delivered by Katarzyna Gaul, MSc Eng, a research and teaching staff member at the Faculty of Navigation, Gdynia Maritime University. Her work focuses on modern technologies used in the blue economy and maritime transport.

As Katarzyna Gaul explains:

Ships are fascinating machines, and Gdynia’s history is inseparably linked with their development. When our city and port were being built, marine propulsion was based on coal and steam. Today, as Gdynia celebrates its centenary, the maritime sector is entering the era of hydrogen, ammonia and wind.

She adds:

During the lecture, I invite you on a journey through the history of marine propulsion and through the decades that made Gdynia one of Europe’s most important port cities. All you need to join us in discovering stories from the past and technologies of the future is curiosity about the world.

The lecture series is organised jointly by Gdynia Maritime University, the Polish Naval Academy, WSB Merito University Gdynia and the Eugeniusz Kwiatkowski University of Business and Administration in cooperation with the City of Gdynia. The initiative forms part of the celebrations marking the city’s centenary and aims to popularise knowledge and introduce residents to the research activity of Gdynia’s universities.

Admission is free. The talks are given in Polish. Further information is available on the Gdynia Maritime University website.
