TriCity GIS Day 2023
GIS Day took place on 15th November 2023 in the University's main auditorium. The event was organised by the loGIStic student scientific circle from the Department of Transport at the Faculty of Navigation.
"GIS Day" is an international educational event aimed at popularising knowledge and the practical application of geographical information systems (GIS). At this year's event, maps of the GMU Permanent Orienteering Courses were presented by Dr Piotr Kopacz, Marcin Sontowski, and Joanna Rogowska.
This year's edition of the Tri-City GIS DAY was made up of three blocks. During the first block, Oktawia Specht gave a presentation explaining GIS and how it is used in research. Giuseppe Figliomeni then presented his use of GIS in shoreline extraction. The third speaker was Tomasz Giętkowski of the Geofabric company, who prepared a presentation entitled "Spatial data and forms of public consultation in Voxly". The first block ended with a competition prepared by the company EnviroSolutions.
The second block began with a speech by Natalia Grudzińska-Miernik from Envirsolutions, who presented possibilities for the creation of plugins in the software QGIS based on the Street View plugin. Marcin Turzyński, from the Gdynia Spatial Planning Office, presented his work in a presentation entitled "Analysing population potential based on mobile phones in the Pomeranian voivodeship." A guest speaker at this year's event was Marcin Marciniak from Lasy Państowe [State Forestry Agency] in Kolbudy, who gave an interesting presentation on how to carry out measurements of natural monuments using a variety of GIS techniques. The last lecture of the second block was given by Marcin Jakubczyk of Boeing Poland, who presented on the use of GIS in aviation. After the lecture, a poster session was held for high school pupils and students. Students from Poznań University of Technology, Krakow University of Technology, Szczecin Maritime University, University of Gdansk and Gdynia Maritime University took part in the poster session.
The third block was opened by Dominika Binieda from the company Esri with a presentation entitled "Spatial Thinking with ArcGIS." Patrycja Parasińska and Magda Bolek of the GISOTEKA Scientific Circle spoke of their activities in a series of presentations entitled "The GISoteka Student Scientific Circle, aka how to combine the pleasant with the useful."
Following the official part, GIS DAY the form of a workshop entitled "The Foundations of Arc Pro." The workshop was led by Dominika Bienięda from Esri.
The honorary patrons of the event were the Mayor of Gdynia, Dr Wojciech Szczurek, and the Gdynia Maritime University Student's Parliament. The media patrons of the event were Radio Gdansk, Radio Mors and Geoforum. This year's GIS DAY was sponsored by 'Moja Gruzja' restaurant, the company Esri and Gdynia Maritime University.
