A Final Farewell to Professor Jacek Januszewski

We were deeply saddened to receive the news of the passing of our colleague, Professor Jacek Januszewski, an academic lecturer in the Faculty of Navigation, educator of generations of Polish Merchant Navy officers, an outstanding specialist in satellite positioning systems, the author of many textbooks, the former head of the Department of Technical Navigation and the Department of Navigation, and a long-standing member of the University Senate.

A funeral Mass will be held on Friday 1 December at 16:00
at the St. Antoni Padewski church at the Franciscan Monastery, ul. Ujejskiego 40. 
The burial service will take place on Saturday 2 December at 10:00
in the Witomino Cemetery, and will be preceeded by prayers
in the chapel at 09:30.


 

Professor Jacek Januszewski was born in 1948 in Gdynia. In 1972, he graduated from the 'Ecole Speciale de Mecanique et Electrice' in Paris. In 1981, he was awarded a doctorate in technical sciences from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at Gdansk University of Technology, and in 1992 he was awarded a Doctor of Science degree in geodesy and cartography from Warsaw University of Technology.

He was a member of staff at Gdynia Maritime University From 1973 until 30th September 2021. During the years 1985-1987, as the deputy director of education, he organised the activities of the Maritime Navigation Institute. From 1997 until 2006, he served as the head of the Department of Technical Navigation, and from 2017 until 2019, the Department of Navigation. He was also a long-standing member of the Senates of the Higher Maritime School and its successor, Gdynia Maritime Academy.

His research interests included navigation satellite systems, operating issues, system geometry, satellite visibility in open and restricted waters, the use of satellite systems in maritime and land transport, and terrestrial navigation systems.

During the 1980s, he took part in scientific research work on navigation ordering in the Polish zone of response in the southern Baltic. During the 1990s, he focused mainly on research into the operational challenges of the GPS and GLONASS systems. The scope of his research was then extended to include the Galileo system built from scratch by Europe and the ever-increasing share of satellite systems in maritime and land-based transport.

Professor Januszewski supervised 248 master's and undergraduate engineering works at the GMU Faculties of Navigation and Electrical Engineering, and was a reviewer of doctoral and postdoctoral works. He was the author of 154 scientific publications, as well as 8 textbooks and monographs.

For his service, he received the award of the Minister of Transport and Maritime Economy (1983 and 1993), the Gold Cross of Merit (2002), the Bronze Cross of Merit (1994), the National Education Medal (1998), the Maritime Personnel Gold Badge of Merit (1992), and 23 Rector's Awards.
